How Much Does Commercial Solar Cost in Ghana?

CIPA Communications ·

Commercial solar installation in Ghana

It's the first question almost every business asks, and it's also the hardest one to answer with a single number. The honest answer is: it depends on your facility, and the more useful question is often not "what will this cost me upfront" but "what will my monthly energy bill look like."

What drives the cost of a commercial solar system

A few factors do most of the work in determining what a solar installation costs: the size of the system (measured in kWp), whether it's rooftop, ground-mount, or carport, the complexity of your site (shading, roof condition, structural work needed), and whether you're adding battery storage for backup power. A small rooftop system for a retail outlet looks nothing like a multi-megawatt ground-mount system for a manufacturing plant, and the cost per watt shifts with scale and site complexity.

Why "zero capex" changes the question entirely

If you finance your system through a Solar as a Service or Energy as a Service model, the upfront cost question mostly disappears. CIPA Energy Resources finances 100% of the system, design, procurement, installation, grid connection, and commissioning, so there's no capital outlay for you to budget around. What matters instead is your monthly tariff: fixed at signing, typically 20 to 40 percent below your current blended grid and diesel cost, and locked in for the length of your contract.

That reframes the real question from "how much does a solar system cost" to "how much will I save every month, starting from commercial operation." For a typical mid-sized commercial or industrial installation, businesses in Ghana are seeing annual savings in the hundreds of thousands of cedis, driven by displacing expensive grid and diesel power during the hours solar generates most.

What to ask before you commit to a number

  • What's my current blended cost per kWh, including diesel backup, not just my grid bill?
  • Is the quoted tariff fixed, and how is any escalation capped?
  • Does the quote include maintenance, monitoring, and component replacement, or are those extra?
  • What happens to the system at the end of the contract?

Any credible provider should be able to walk you through a detailed savings model built around your actual consumption data, not a generic estimate. That's the number that actually matters.
