How to Choose a Commercial Solar Financing Partner in Ghana

CIPA Communications ·

Commercial solar financing partner reviewing a project in Ghana

Once you've decided commercial solar makes sense for your business, the next decision, who finances and delivers it, matters as much as the decision to go solar in the first place. Here's what's worth checking before you sign anything.

Is financing actually included, or just installation?

Some providers install systems. Fewer actually finance them. Confirm whether the company you're talking to can carry 100% of the project cost themselves, or whether you'll still need to arrange your own loan or financing facility. A true zero-capex model means the provider owns the asset and carries construction risk, not you.

Who actually builds it, and to what standard?

Ask who the EPC delivery partner is, what technical standards the system is built to, and whether an independent owner's engineer signs off before commissioning. A provider with a consistent, documented quality and safety standard across every project, regardless of which contractor is on site, is a meaningfully lower-risk choice than one where standards vary by installer.

Is the tariff structure actually fixed, and what happens at the end?

Check whether your tariff is genuinely fixed at signing, how any escalation is capped, and what happens to the asset at the end of the contract term. A credible Energy Service Agreement or Power Purchase Agreement should spell out termination provisions, insurance responsibilities, and end-of-term ownership options clearly, not leave them vague.

Do they operate locally, and are they properly licensed?

A provider with a real operating presence across Ghana, not just a head office in one city, and a documented, verifiable regulatory standing with Ghana's Energy Commission, gives you a much easier due diligence process and a partner who understands local grid conditions, permitting, and utility relationships firsthand.
