5 Signs Your Business Is Ready for Commercial Solar

Engineers assessing a commercial site for solar readiness

Not every business is at the right stage to make the switch, and that's fine. Here's a straightforward checklist to work out whether now is the time to look seriously at commercial solar, or whether it's worth revisiting in a year.

1. Your diesel or grid bill is a real, recurring pain point

If fuel procurement, generator maintenance, or unpredictable grid tariffs show up as a recurring frustration in your monthly costs, that's usually the clearest signal. Businesses spending upward of tens of thousands of cedis a month on diesel alone tend to see the fastest, clearest return from switching.

2. You have suitable roof space or land

Rooftop, ground-mount, and carport configurations all work, but the site needs to be assessed for shading, structural capacity, and orientation. This is exactly what a feasibility study is for, and it costs nothing to find out.

3. You're planning to occupy the facility for the medium to long term

Solar contracts, whether an Energy Service Agreement or Power Purchase Agreement, typically run 15 to 20 years. If you're on a short lease or planning to relocate within a couple of years, the economics change. If you own the facility or have a long-term lease, the full value of the arrangement plays out.

4. You have sustainability or ESG reporting obligations

If you're being asked for carbon data by a parent company, a lender, or an international buyer, solar with verified CO2 reporting turns that obligation into something you can document properly, rather than a gap in your reporting.

5. Your energy demand is stable enough to model

A feasibility study needs a reasonably clear picture of your consumption pattern, from utility bills and, ideally, load data. If your facility's demand is highly volatile or you're mid-way through a major operational change, it's worth waiting until that settles before sizing a system.

If most of these apply to you, the next step costs nothing: a feasibility study and indicative offer, with no obligation to proceed.
