The Real Cost of Diesel Backup Power in Ghana

CIPA Communications ·

Battery energy storage system replacing diesel backup

Most Ghanaian businesses don't think of their generator as a major cost centre. It's just there, running when the grid isn't, and the fuel bill gets paid along with everything else. Add it up properly, though, and diesel backup is often one of the largest hidden costs on the books.

Fuel is only the beginning

Running a 100kVA generator for eight hours a day, at current Ghanaian diesel prices, costs in the range of GHS 1,800 to 2,400 per day, or roughly GHS 54,000 to 72,000 a month, before maintenance. Servicing, oil changes, filter replacements, and periodic overhauls on a heavily used generator typically add another GHS 8,000 to 20,000 a month. None of that shows up as a single obvious line item. It's spread across fuel procurement, maintenance contracts, and emergency repairs, which is exactly why so few businesses have a clear picture of what backup power actually costs them each year.

The cost you don't see until the power goes out

The bigger cost is often downtime itself. Generator start-up lag, and the occasional switchover failure, means a facility can lose production during the gap between grid failure and backup power kicking in. For a manufacturer running at GHS 50,000 an hour in throughput, a single 30-minute outage costs roughly GHS 25,000 in lost output, on top of whatever the generator itself is costing to run.

What the alternative looks like

Battery energy storage, deployed alongside solar or standalone, changes the equation. A properly sized BESS system switches over in under 20 milliseconds, with no generator start-up lag, and can be configured to provide anywhere from two hours to more than 24 hours of backup depending on your load and outage profile. There's no fuel to procure, no servicing schedule, and no noise or emissions. When paired with solar, it also captures and stores surplus daytime generation that would otherwise go unused, extending clean energy coverage well into the evening.

None of this requires replacing your generator overnight. Many businesses start with partial diesel displacement and scale up as the economics prove out. The starting point is simply knowing what backup power is actually costing you today.
